The XML import populates the database you create when you install Wordpress, thus eliminating the need to create and restore dumps as you would in other cases. I recommend creating and exporting an XML file every few weeks just to have a back up of your Wordpress blog in the event that something happens, because then you would still have all your posts intact. That exactly is the beauty of this method, and why I was so pleased that it worked!
