I love Akismet because it has saved me a lot of time and ibuprofen (that I would be taking for the headaches I would get trying to ward off spammers. Here’s why:

Akismet Spam

Now this blog hasn’t been around for that long, considering that I made my first post on June 13 of this year, and I haven’t been posting as regularly as I would like, so to have been hit with that amount of spam in such a short time is something to think about!

Let’s think about this for a few minutes: This blog has been online for about 6 months now, that’s approximately 180 days, give or take. If you do the math, you find that this comes to about 8 spam messages a day!! Wow!!

Since I have comment moderation turned on, without Akismet I would be getting on average 8 emails a day to moderate comments on this blog alone!

Do you see now why I love Akismet?

If you have a WordPress blog, make sure that you enable Akismet, it will save you lots and lots of time!

  1. Hey Mary, I’m interested to learn what other plugins you are using. Have you upgraded to WP 2.6 yet?

  2. JP,
I haven’t upgraded to 2.6 yet, this is one of the gripes I have with WP is that you have to constantly update. I’ll probably start updating my blogs soon though.

Regarding plugins, this is the list of plugins I am currently using:

Code Snippet – http://blog.enargi.com/codesnippet/ – This is a code highlighting plugin that allows me to write code snippets for example in tutorials.

DoFollow – http://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/dofollow/ – This selectively disables the “nofollow” tagging for comments so that links in comments get weight.

Easy Tube – This allows me to place YouTube objects in WordPress Content

Feedburner Feedsmith – http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/help/wordpress_quickstart – detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber

Google XML Sitemaps – http://www.arnebrachhold.de/redir/sitemap-home/ – This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO

Related Entries – http://www.semiologic.com/software/widgets/terms2posts/ – Leverages Yahoo’s terms extraction web service to display related posts on your site.

  3. Hey sorry I’m just getting back to this. Did you update yet? I haven’t upgraded to WP 2.6 yet either. I’ll test it out one lazy Sunday, when I have nothing else to do.

    Later,
    JP

  4. I haven’t upgraded yet!! Been too lazy and I’ve been spending a lot of time playing with Drupal :).

Let me know how your upgrade goes. I think I’ll start with my smaller blogs and see how that goes before I update the bigger ones.
